Products  /  NTP Time Servers

A GPS NTP time server is a network appliance that receives time directly from GPS (or another GNSS constellation) and distributes it to every device on your network using the Network Time Protocol (NTP) or its lightweight variant, SNTP. Because the server's own clock is disciplined by GPS, it operates as a Stratum 1 source — the top of the NTP hierarchy — so any client synchronizing against it is one hop away from a primary reference, rather than depending on a public internet time pool.

Why network time matters

Most systems don't need atomic-clock precision; they need every device to agree. Firewalls, servers, CCTV systems, PLCs, access-control logs and transaction logs all timestamp events independently. If those clocks drift apart, correlating a security incident, an audit trail or a transaction becomes far harder. An on-premise NTP time server removes that ambiguity by giving the whole network one shared reference, with no dependency on internet connectivity to a public NTP pool.

Where NTP time servers are used

On-premise NTP servers are standard in telecom exchanges, power utilities and substations, railway and transport control rooms, data centres, banking and financial systems, government networks, and any enterprise IT environment where security logging or compliance requires a trustworthy internal time source. The same server can also act as the master for a building's network slave clocks.

Choosing between our 7000 Series time servers

ORNATE 7000 TSDRNT — for sites that need more than plain NTP output. Alongside NTP/SNTP it also outputs PTP (IEEE 1588), IRIG-B, 1PPS and serial time strings from the same GPS reference, so it can feed legacy SCADA and protection-relay equipment as well as your modern IP network from a single box.

ORNATE 7000 TSDRNPT — the same GPS-referenced core with a front-panel LCD display, so sync status, GPS lock, satellite count, IP address and client connections can be checked without opening a browser session.

ORNATE 7000 TSDR Series — the security-hardened variant, with NTS protocol support, tamper-resistant housing, audit logging, multi-level authentication, air-gapped operation and dedicated VLAN support.

NTP or PTP?

If your requirement is millisecond-class synchronization across a standard IP network, NTP is the right protocol and any of the servers above will serve it. If you need sub-microsecond synchronization — for 5G backhaul, financial trading or synchrophasors — you need PTP, which the ORNATE 7000 TSDRNT already outputs alongside NTP. Read our NTP vs PTP guide for the full technical breakdown, and our IRIG-B guide if you are feeding substation or SCADA equipment.

Monitoring every server from one screen

Our Management Server Software monitors NTP time servers as master units — sync lock status, drift and uptime — alongside the clocks they serve.
